Like anything fishing related, focus on giving the fish what they want. Assuming you found some fish, work individual programs based on your knowledge of water conditions, seasonality, and fish.
For example, I wouldn't be trolling the mud on Lake Winnebago in September/October. Not to say it would be successful, but Winnebago mud bite happens in June and July.
So to increase my success, I would leave the mud and focus on other areas. I know the lake has a pretty decent population of crawfish. I would then work the rocks. Now which rocks would I pick?
Well the rocks focused on the windward side. In Sep/October, South/Southwest winds are scarce. So, when one blows up, I immediately look for the rocks on the east shore.
Now I look for crank in moderate to slow action. Something like shad rap or maybe even a walleye diver. I wouldnt want a hot n tot. Too much action. I would then choose a crawfish colored pattern. Maybe a jointed red crawfish on one line, a gold color on line #2, a black/yellow on line #3 and finally a constant color or shad/perch color.
I would change 3 baits other than the perch/shad color. That is my constant.
I would then focus on how deep. One would pound the rocks, one just above, one midrange and one just below the surface. Working a couple of passes, I would see which would get some action.
Hopefully, the SPAD plan will get more fish in your livewell. Like I mentioned, it assumes you found some fish primarily by electronics.
SPEED - PRESENTATION - ACTION - DEPTH
Speed, Presentation, Action and Depth are the key foundation when you found fish and want to make them bite.
SPEED: How fast, how slow, cadence, etc
PRESENTATION: What are your offerings, ie, jigs, cranks, leadcore, flatline, 3 way trolling, handline, poleline.
ACTION: High wobble, low wobble, high action crank (like hot n tot), slow action crank (like original rapala crank) or a stickbait.
DEPTH: What level, how deep, how shallow, how does the bait ride.
Put these components to use and can come up with a number of SPAD programs:
1.) Verticle jigging slow just off bottom with minnow no stinger in 6 to 8 FOW, slipping, with a "pop".
2.) 3 way river trolling with a #5 Firetiger Shad Rap RSS, on a 4 foot leader, in 10 FOW, with a 3oz weight on 6 inch dropper, going 2 MPH, tacking the current upriver.
3.) Polelining a 12 oz weight with a 18 foot top leader to a F9 Orange Original Rapala and a 6 foot leader on the bottom to a Rainbow reef runner, with crawler pieces on back cranks, in 16 FOW in front of a bridge pileon.
